Program Notes
Between 1916-17, Charles Chaplin made twelve short comedies for the Mutual Film Company. These comedies, often known as "the Mutuals," represent some of Chaplin's finest comedy work in the character of the "little Tramp."
The Immigrant remains relevant more than 100 years after its 1917 release. Shot in two acts, the film depicts Charlie as an immigrant to the USA, encountering rough treatment on board the boat and more in his new country, as we see in his run-in with a menacing waiter in a restaurant.
This score is composed specifically to follow the events and emotions of the film.
